This exciting international project embodies all of the key elements of the interdisciplinary IGERT approach — integration of the natural (biophysical) and social sciences, explication of the roles of values and ethics, and intensive collaboration of multiple disciplines on problem-based scholarship. It is also providing valuable insights for our interdisciplinary curriculum and research program on ecosystem services for urbanizing regions.

The project was tasked to the student group through the Delta Alliance (http://www.delta-alliance.org/) – The Delta Alliance is an international knowledge-driven network organization with the mission of improving the resilience of the world’s deltas. One of the Delta Alliance’s focus regions is Indonesia – and this is how I believe the project and the initial application Delta was decided upon.

I like the integration of the ES language to enrich the FSSD. My concern about the FSSD has long been its difficulty in addressing specific issues; FSSD tends to be more high level and the addition of the ES concepts/language may usefully ground the framework and result in more pragmatic actions. Well done.
