If you teach a man about his relationship with fish, you will have fish and men until the end of time
As part of an interdisciplinary team in the Ecosystem Restoration through Interdisciplinary Exchange (ERIE) IGERT Program, graduate students evaluated the hydrologic, ecological, and cultural aspects of The Tuscarora Nation Wetlands Restoration and Ecological Enhancement Project. Unique to this wetland restoration project was the inclusion of a holistic adaptive management approach that included community, culture, and traditional values for the Tuscarora Nation. Our interdisciplinary team was invited to work with Tuscarora Environment Program (TEP), guided by the Haudenosaunee Environmental Protection Process (HEPP) to provide analysis of multiple facets of this project. The team reviewed data collected to date and evaluated some preliminary design concepts prepared by a local environmental consulting company. Focused recommendations for future work have been established, and the overall collaborative, multicultural effort will continue in an ongoing partnership between the University at Buffalo ERIE IGERT program and the TEP.
